My art is a contemporary exploration of the American flag as a symbol of hope and connection

My flag paintings are based on my desire to inspire us to recognize how beautiful America is and to inspire us to maintain this radical experiment. I feel the flag, from its difficult inception, is a part of America to be honored so that is in my mind when I start a painting. Basically I start with an idea of the layout of a piece, where the stars will go, and from there I look at my colors, and from there I draw in a basic outline. I use a brush, sponge or pallet knife to execute my idea, making adjustments as I go.

My ‘Variations on the Flag’ series explores the American flag as a symbol of unity, beauty, and the values that bring us together. The United States of America is a living experiment of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for all, a value to be honored. We are going through a transitional period that I hope will bring our values more into focus. I have a deep love for our country and use my art as a way to encourage people to see beyond the disharmony of today by focusing on our flag, representing an idea that was radical 250 years ago and still is today!
